Tuning In!

One of the things I like to highlight anytime I have the opportunity to share Chiropractic with a prospective new person in my office is just how amazing the body’s innate intelligence is. I try my best to be fully present during these interactions and when I describe and really acknowledge just a few of the trillions of processes that occur each day that we never have to think about, I continue to be amazed and awed (things like keeping our hearts beating, cellular replacement, hormone creation, waste removal, etc.). When it comes to physical processes, health, and healing, the above-down-inside-out philosophy makes a lot of sense.

I’d like to explore this inside-out concept a little further and share how it has and is influencing my life as a chiropractor. For all my chiropractic “philosophy nerds” out there (guilty as charged!) there seems to be a slight division between BJ Palmer and Reggie Gold regarding the role of innate. BJ seemed to ascribe unique characteristics to innate, occasionally referring to it as that small voice or “fellow” within, while it seems Reggie differentiated between that “inside voice” or “spirit” as something separate from the innate intelligence. No matter where you side with this philosophical discussion there is something profound about applying an “Inside-Out” philosophy to all areas of our lives.

Whether you believe that still, small voice is a function of the body’s innate intelligence or a separate entity of your spirit or essence, I am learning that tuning in to it can be an incredible experience. It seems like we have been conditioned as a society to look outside of ourselves for the answers to challenges or personal growth. (Is it any wonder why self-help or how-to books continue to fly off the shelves?) I occasionally find myself going “outside-in” when it comes building my chiropractic practice or growing in other areas of my life, sometimes thinking that the answer lies behind a new marketing technique or office procedure that may be working wonders for somebody else. I am very grateful for the numerous mentors and ideas that have been shared with me in this regard, but I am learning to better filter these outside ideas with what resonates with my spirit.

The “inside-out” philosophy is a brilliant insight that can be applied to any area of our lives including health, finances, business, relationships, etc. By taking the time to be still and listen, or by engaging inspirational activities we can re-learn to hear and feel this inner wisdom. However you may connect, I want to encourage you explore and develop an ability to tune into this inner voice. A friend and mentor recently shared the following statement that has had a big impact regarding this concept. “When your inner voice becomes louder than the voices on the outside, you will find that life-changes come easily and naturally.”
