What are two necessary components of learning a new skill? TIME AND REPETITION! Whether it's learning to play the piano, how to make a jump shot in basketball, how to surf or how to draw we need practice and reps in order for the activity to become a habit to our brain and nerve system. This concept is known as neural plasticity or the change and adaptations that take place in our nerve system.
The same principles apply with Chiropractic adjustments. It takes time and repetition to create new healthy connections between your spine and brain and to break up some of the adhesions and scar tissue caused by subluxations. In the same way that each time you practice a new skill or each time you exercise builds upon the previous times, each adjustment works towards creating a clearer brain-body connection and healthy neuro-spinal habits. HITTING THE RESET BUTTON...
Happy April! Feels like spring is in the air this morning! What a great time of year to be taking care of your spine and brain-body connection to best prepare for the warm weather activities right around the corner (surfing, walking the beach, kayaking, etc.) Each time you get adjusted it's like re-booting your body's computer system. Areas of spinal dysfunction known as subluxations act like glitches in your brain's ability to properly integrate information and coordinate everything your body does. If your brain can't properly interpret it's environment and control each cell, tissue and organ that makes up your body, it is impossible for you to reach your full potential in life and health. There's no better time to begin nourishing this vital brain-body connection than now! Brent Vuyovich, DC Like anybody, I get asked from time to time what I do for a living? Telling people that I am a Chiropractor over the last several years, I have experienced the varied reactions and responses this evokes in people. From excitement and sharing a great experience they have had with getting adjusted, to the common "well my back hurts here" followed by a laugh, to fairly strong skepticism.
These mixed responses prove there is still quite a bit of misconception surrounding Chiropractic...so I want to clear up what Chiropractic is all about here at Thrive and what the adjustment really means to me...so buckle up ;) I believe Chiropractic can be best summed up with one word...CONNECTION. And who doesn't want greater connection in Life? When your spine is subluxated and not moving properly, it causes a breakdown in the connection between your brain and the rest of your body...your entire body (not just the parts that hurt). Don't you think it's important for your brain and body to be able to clearly communicate? Me too! That's what it's all about...restoring connection between your brain and body so that your entire body works at a higher level. When your spine is clear your brain is better able to perceive, interpret and integrate all of the trillions of bits of information it receives every second and better able to control all of the 70 trillion cells that make up you. Still following me? Let's go one step deeper. By restoring and strengthening the brain-body connection, Chiropractic better connects you with the incredible, innate wisdom of your body. A properly moving and aligned spine is a requirement for your brain to work optimally (and really who doesn't want to optimize their brain!) In addition to stimulating the pleasure/relaxation pathways of the brain, Chiropractic adjustments allow the brain to better integrate the sensory input that determines how we perceive and experience life. This is powerful stuff considering that the brain and nerve system control and coordinate every single function our bodies perform. How many people do you think feel this way about their New Year resolutions? I know I have before! Each January millions of people bring their best intentions to the table, only to watch them fall by the wayside come February or March. What would be a convenient, realistic resolution you can stick with for 2015 that impacts your ENTIRE body and all around performance? Maintenance Chiropractic care! Your spine is the foundation of your entire body. Having it checked on a weekly basis restores balance to your body's master control system (nerve system) and allows for the signals between your brain and body to travel with greater clarity! These are requirements for a flower to be the best flower it can be. Just like a flower has requirements, so do you! Human beings were designed to flourish. By providing our bodies with what they need (healthy fuel, water, rest, love, movement, CHIROPRACTIC!) we give ourselves the best opportunity for health. Every time you get adjusted you are restoring a requirement! Adjustments provide clarity to the system (nerve system) that regulates everything your body does (immunity, digestion, energy, sleep, chemical balance, healing, strength, etc.) So who benefits from getting adjusted? WHO- As in who benefits from Chiropractic care...Everyone. If you have a spine and nerve system than you are better off maintaining it and making sure your Brain-Body connection is clear. WHAT- do I do at Thrive Chiropractic? Restore motion and alignment to the spine...for a clear brain-body connection...so your entire body functions better. WHEN- should I have my spine checked? I recommend weekly chiropractic checks and adjustments as needed. This is how often I have my spine checked and I offer this recommendation to you. After an initial higher frequency phase weekly checks are a great idea because we are countering years of wear and tear to the spine and everyday stress which causes subluxations in the first place. For me, much of the beauty of Chiropractic rests in it's simplicity... 1) The human body is an amazing creation with a brilliant design. How does your body know how to take the food you eat and create new cells from it? Because it is intelligent...Your body is self-regulating and self healing! 2) Your Nerve system is the master control system of the body- It controls and coordinates EVERYTHING your body does! 3) Subluxations (spinal misalignments that often cannot be felt) interfere with this master control system and always cause your body to work at less than 100%. 4) I adjust to reduce and remove subluxations to restore potential, health and performance! Who is better off without subluxations?- EVERYONE! It's really that simple! Brent Vuyovich, DC ![]() I love seeing what the body is capable of once a clear brain-body connection and proper spinal motion and alignment are restored. Over the years not only have I experienced major shifts but I have had the opportunity to witness some awesome changes regarding health and performance once people begin to get adjusted. Things like improved energy levels, better sleep, pain and symptoms disappearing, increased immunity, better workouts, feeling more clear headed, greater flexibility, digestive troubles clearing up, and more... I want to be clear that chiropractic is not a treatment for any specific disease or condition. However, by restoring a bodily requirement (proper spinal alignment and motion) chiropractic gives the body a greater chance to work and heal the way it is designed to. Seeing these positive changes in people's lives is exciting and inspiring. So is thinking about the many problems that aren't given a chance to develop because people are regularly taking care of their spines and nerve systems with maintenance care, wellness care. If we take a look at the current health landscape in our country, I believe we have to ask how well is the current model working with regards to overall health and wellbeing. We spend more money, have more doctors, more hospitals, take more drugs and have more procedures done each year yet we continue to have more sick people per capita. So what is going on? While allopathic medicine undoubtedly has an incredible important ability to save lives in regards to emergency situations, I believe it's time to shift our goal from treating symptoms to restoring health. Treating symptoms with a pill doesn't equate to moving a person into a healthier state of being.
Our bodies are designed to thrive and flourish as long as we provide them with what is required for optimum function and minimize toxins. Our bodies require movement, nutritious foods, sleep, water, a healthy mindset and one of the most overlooked- PROPER SPINAL ALIGNMENT AND MOTION! Why is this last one so important, yet overlooked? I believe it is because most people have been led to believe or think that Chiropractic is for back pain relief, which truly limits how powerful an adjustment is. Chiropractic is all about restoring a proper brain-body connection which is a vital component to health, healing and normal function in the body. Rather than waiting until things begin to break down or simply hushing symptoms chemically (because looking at the stats that isn't working to well for our country), let's get proactive and start supplying our bodies with what they need for a greater expression of health.
